It’s easy
running with the wind – it doesn’t usually take a lot of effort, and the crew
can pretty much relax as if it was a full-service cruise. But there’s a lot more thrill and challenge
– and a lot more work needed – to tack into the wind. But going to weather is usually necessary if you want to get to
where you want to go.
The same goes for organizations like the NLSC. It takes considerable effort to take the
club forward. Fortunately we have a great crew this year – our new club
officers. Let me introduce them:
Bob Rouda - Commodore: That’s me. My job is to assign and manage the duty
rosters and watches. And to get credit for a lot of the work which is really
being done by the rest of our crew:
Jay Biggs - Vice (Rear?) Commodore:
Besides taking over for my
downtime, Jay heads our nominations committee (to recruit or shanghai new and
old members to our Board of Directors). He also manages our ship’s store to
provide clothing and related gear to our members and others.
Lisa Broom – Purser: That’s
treasurer, in street talk. Lisa handles all of our finances – membership,
trips, meetings, budget, whatever. And
more.
Peter Cotton – Scribe: Secretary. Peter logs our Board meetings and keeps track of a
lot of other stuff (I’m still trying to find out what. So is he.)
Ron Carlson – Promotions & Marketing: Ron plans to expand our activities and membership
by establishing liaisons with other sailing organizations, such as yacht clubs,
educational organizations (U.S. Power & Sail Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliary), sailing schools, yacht brokers, marinas, chandleries, and
more. He’s developing a PowerPoint
presentation to support these outreach activities. Talk about taking us to
weather!
Jerry Sicard – Programs: Jerry is developing the programs and securing
moorings for our monthly meetings and special events – he already has the
program calendar set for the rest of this year. He has a lot of good, new ideas
– if you have more, he’d like to hear from you.
Joan Gilmore – Education: Capt. Joan will be working with Ron to establish
relations with sailing educational organizations, and with Jerry on
establishing and developing an educational theme – “Rules of the Road” - for
our meetings during the next 12 months. She, along with Jake Smith, is
developing a mentoring program to help develop our members’ sailing skills.
They are also exploring a virtual library.
Kevin Crothers - Trip Coordinator: Kevin not only will be working with
our trip leaders and skippers to provide sailing opportunities for our members,
but also has already established our new “Spar of the Moment” program, to help
our boat owners (who need crew) and our members (who need boats) to hook up for
ad-hoc “let’s go sailing”. Kevin developed and presented our Skippers’ Meeting (held last
month), and our Trip Leaders’ Meeting (to be held in October). He’s also
learning the ropes to take over as the next Commodore in November.
Marge Collins - Membership: Marge manages our correspondence – snailmail and e-mail directed to the club. She monitors our inboxes and forwards the stuff to the appropriate club officer, trip leader, program organizer, or to whomever it may concern. Oh, yeah – she also handles our membership applications, renewals, membership database and club roster (membership directory).
Lisa Broom: Newsletter. Lisa remains the editor and article/information solicitor for Bearings, our monthly bulletin. She’s taking two watches! We need a replacement to take over as Newsletter editor – please volunteer to help us.
Bob Rouda – “WebMaster & Commander” :) Me again. I’m the webslinger for NLSC.ORG , our website, trying to keep the information as current as possible. Check out the “What’s New” section – regularly – for changes and new information I may have posted since you last checked-in. Input is appreciated – keep those cards and letters coming, folks!
Leota Spalla, Wayne Hokemeir, Scott Wright, Gordy Rosine, Kim Wright - Past Commodores / Advisors: These are the experienced hands at running our ship. We want and need their advice, both to help us get to our destinations and to keep us off the rocks.
YOU – Trip leaders, skippers, program providers, home sharers, participants and sailors: This organization will continue on course if we keep getting volunteers to take the helm for a stretch.
If you see these people at our meetings or trips, thank them for their service to our club!
Contact any of us if you have any ideas, want to help out, or just to contact someone about any club activities:
NLSC_MAIL@YAHOO.COM – don’t leave home without it.
Fair winds,
- R^2
