  • NLSC is now on Facebook!
    • Click the link above
    • You can also go to http://www.facebook.com and do a search for "Northern Lights Sailing Club", and you'll find us as well.
    • What you need to do:
      • a) If you're on Facebook - Please head to the page and hit the 'Like' button on top of the page. The more fans we have the better... if we have 25 fans or more we get our custom URL, which means we'll have something like www.facebook.com/northernlightssailingclub (just an example). Also, feel free to recommend the page to anybody else you know on Facebook. Yes, even your mother-in-law! ;)
      • b) If you're NOT on Facebook - Sign up for Facebook, then follow a) above.
      • c) If Facebook is something you'll never do - Quit reading now (no worries), sorry to waste your time. It's ok.
    • Done so far: We've posted photos, videos, events, and updated the info tab.
    • Stuff to come: All NLSC information - including: events, photos, videos, sailing links.
    • What's going to be great about it: It's about participation! Social media IS about people interacting so that's how we are planning on running the site. Members and non-members can interact and talk about sailing and related issues.
    • For more information, contact Steve Engelmayer, our NLSC Facebook Manager.
  • NLSC Is Going Green!
    • As of January 1, 2011, Bearings, the NLSC newsletter, will be delivered to members electronically by e-mail instead of on paper by snail-mail.
    • We have decided to go electronic for two reasons:
      • First, it's the environmentally responsible thing to do; by discontinuing the paper newsletter we can reduce waste and save a few trees.
      • Second, we can save a lot of money, too. The printing and mailing costs associated with producing and delivering Bearings to all members accounts for about 40% of the club's total annual budget -- and we don't expect those costs ever to decrease. If instead we deliver the newsletter by e-mail, the club will have considerably more money to spend on sailing events and activities.
    • We realize that some members do not use e-mail, and we will continue to send paper copies to those members who request one. IF YOU STILL WANT TO HAVE PAPER COPIES OF BEARINGS MAILED TO YOU:
      • Log into the "Members Only" section of our website and go to "Edit My Information", then check the appropriate box.
      • OR complete & return the form which appears in our Bearings newsletter.
    • Members without Internet or e-mail should be sure to request to receive mailed, paper copies. Follow the procedure above. - Notice the part about people without Internet access using the on-line procedure to request paper copies     :)
  • An Illustrated Cruising Guide to the Great Lakes Inland Waterway
    • Mark & Diana Doyle's latest cruising guide is finished and going to press.
    • This guide covers part of the Great Loop - Chicago to Paducah via the Illinois Waterway and the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.
    • Their updated website includes 10 screencasts to help readers get the most out of its new contents and design, sample pages, cover images, etc.
    • This raises cruising guides to a whole new level - take a look.
    • Thanks again to the Doyles for their two excellent presentations at recent NLSC Monthly Meetings.
  • Spar Of The Moment - contacts for Informal, last-minute sailing opportunities - linking crew with boats
      • SOTM is an easy way to make connections and "get out on the lake".
      • NLSC is posting the names of interested members either willing to share their boat or serve as crew.
    • 1 - SIGN UP:
      • The SOTM tables are linked in with the on-line membership directory - that's where we get your contact information.
      • Log in to the NLSC Members Only area of our website, then select "Edit My Information" and manage it yourself.
      • You do not have to contact the webmaster to have your information added, deleted, or changed.
      • Members without E-mail addresses or Internet access should contact the webmaster to manage your SOTM information.
    • 2 - GO SAILING:
      • Log in to the NLSC Members Only area of our website, then select "Spar of the Moment" to see who has signed up.
      • If you know it's going to be windy the next day, call for a possible spot on a boat or call for crew.
      • It's up to you now. If you want to go sailing, make the call. DON'T WAIT to be called!
